Welcome to

York Shotokan Mixed Martial Arts - Children

Thank you for your interest in our program. York Shotokan Karate is dedicated to providing the finest martial arts and self-defense training available, and has been doing so for over forty years.  We will be happy to answer any specific questions about our school and philosophy, and hope that the following information will be helpful to you.

What is Shotokan Karate? This is a particular style of martial arts that was developed in Okinawa and Japan by Master Gichin Funakoshi in the early to mid Twentieth Century. It is based on concepts that have been in existence for thousands of years. Karate emphasizes strong, accurate techniques, using all parts of the body for defense and attack. Philosophically, Shotokan considers your mind to be your best defense and best weapon, and fighting is only to be used as a last resort

Who can join?  York Shotokan's kid's classes are designed for 4, 5, 6, and 7-year-old children.  Usually children who are eight years of age or older are accepted into the regular classes.

What's the difference between Kid's classes and the regular martial arts program?

Kid's classes are designed to meet the special needs of younger children who generally are not physically, emotionally, or mentally ready for certain aspects of "regular" martial arts. Emphasis is placed on physical skills such as balance, hand / eye coordination, flexibility, etc.  Dealing with conflict through non-violent means, danger awareness, respect for others, and other age appropriate "mental aspects" of martial arts training are incorporated. Of course, basic physical self-defense skills will be taught to the children, but kept in an atmosphere that can be enjoyable as well as useful. Children will also be taught the basic stances, blocks, kicks and punches of the Shotokan system. This will provide the basic building blocks for those children who wish to "graduate" into the regular class when appropriate.

When are the classes held?  Classes are scheduled Monday and Wednesday evenings from: 6:30 to 7:15PM.  Children may attend either evening or both.

What are the fees?  The monthly fee is $50, which includes all classes. The second member from the same family would pay $25; any additional members pay $15 each. There is no belt test or other fees, or contracts. Dues are to be paid on the 1st of each month.

When can I start?  We require all students (and a parent when the potential student is a minor) to observe a class and complete an application and provide us with two (2) photographs prior to starting their training.

A student may start at any time during the month; fees are pro-rated.

What about belt rankings, promotions, etc.?  York Shotokan Karate's philosophy is that children of this age group are best taught in a non-competitive, less stressful program. Belt rankings at this developmental stage are very subjective and are not comparable to rankings in regular programs. Therefore, children will be promoted to "junior" rankings. If the child wishes to switch to the regular program when appropriate, he or she will be tested at the next scheduled test date and given a rank based on their abilities.

Must I purchase a uniform right away?  No, we suggest that new students wear loose fitting clothes (sweatpants and sweatshirt or T-shirt are good options) until they are comfortable that they wish to continue training.  However, a uniform (gi) may be purchased at any time, if you so desire.
